LEAPROOF

Autumn in London, is always full of fallen leaves everywhere on the streets. The ombre hues of the leaves gives us a chance to experience the beauty of nature, but at the end of autumn, humans spend so much money and workforce to dispose of and incinerate the very leaves they dearly adored throughout the season.

Some food for thought, why did humans end up cleaning fallen leaves that were supposed to return to nature by themselves?

Originally, leaves would grow and flourish on trees only to fall and rekindle with the Earth beneath as natural fertilizers. But in the case of leaves in urban cities such as London and Seoul, they became unsuitable to return to the soil due to the presence of heavy metals from traffic pollution. The ill-practices of humans have caused a disruption in the circularity of natural processes.

It’s time to trace back the original life cycle of leaves and stimulate thoughts on how to recover it.

‘LEAPROOF’ is a bio-degradable and lightweight waterproof textile made from fallen leaves and plant-based non-toxic chemicals. The aim was to explore how natural waste can be recreated into functional garments and further, how we can reconnect the circular chain of fallen leaves by creating value and profit from leaves, and reinvesting it into the construction of urban plats again.
